IT BEGINS: STUDYING LAW IN FLORIDA

I applied to only one law school: The University of Florida Levin College of Law.

If you want to practice law in Florida, you want to go to UF. It might not be in the Ivy League and doesn’t always place first in the rankings, but the most successful lawyers in the state tend to be its graduates. Growing-up in Florida, I have spent my entire life hearing how UF Law stands apart from all the other schools and produces the most successful practitioners of Florida law.

Florida is a strange place. You can spend your entire life here and still not understand all the crazy things that happen. The ridiculous stories about our nefarious heroes “Florida Man” and “Florida Woman” gain national attention and constantly set the internet abuzz, but their antics are often tame compared to the activities of average Floridians on a day to day basis. Political analysts and the news are perplexed by us and wonder how a state can cast its electoral votes for Barrack Obama and choose Rick Scott to be governor, twice; but this makes perfect sense to someone from Florida. Sometimes the only people who can understand this are the people who live here.

The state of Florida doesn’t let just anyone be a lawyer. We have a nonreciprocal bar, meaning we only let those who have passed the Florida Bar practice law. Florida Law stands apart from the rest of the country: Our statutes are unique, our caselaw is unique, our state’s constitution is unique. Someone who doesn’t understand the uniqueness of the state can’t expect to be a succeed as an attorney in Florida.

I am just now beginning my journey into the study of law in Florida. This fall I will be a 1L at the University of Florida. I will spend the next three years learning what it will take to practice law in the state I was born. I intend to document my journey through this blog along the way and share my experiences with the whole internet.

I have heard many varying tales about how the first year of law school is. Some have said it will be the most difficult experience of my life and challenge my intellect on a daily basis. Others tell me it will be a breeze and I will be bored out of my mind. I have heard terrible stories of relationships ending and friendships being destroyed but have also heard about creating lifelong partnerships and successful, happy marriages. With this blog, I intend to show the true story of law student in Florida on his path to becoming an attorney.

Going to law school does not happen in a bubble; the law is always changing. Court decisions are constantly being updated. New regulations are adopted all the time, and every year the legislature passes new laws. Along with documenting my personal experiences, I will also use this space to comment on political and legal happenings throughout the Florida and the whole country.

I do not know what the future will bring. I am not sure the shape this blog will take or the number of readers it will have. I don’t know much about website design or HTML. I can only hope you enjoy what I write and will do my best to post entertaining and educational posts.

The Journey Begins Now.
